Industry Related Associations
The National Adventure Committee was formed during 1983 with the support of SAVSLOR and the Department of Education section Sport and Recreation to advice the first National Training Centre at Outshoorn known as CARO – (Cape Adventure and Recreation Training /Opleiding ) centre on training needs and programs to train and certify outdoor leaders as competent to accompany groups into the outdoors.
The Association was officially formed in 1987, at Bloemfontein with the new name known as The Outdoor Adventure Association - OAA as a result of the private sector and Outward Bound that advocate for a more representative body instead of a selected Committee to represent training and general needs of the outdoor recreation and experiential learning industry.
This was a period in which many private organizations started their own Centres along the examples of the Outward Bound Schools, entrepreneurship of trainees that completed training courses at CARO and research that was done by Dr Pascall
The name of the Association was changed during 1996 to the Adventure Recreation Association - ARA

AMERICAN RECREATION COALITION - ARC
AMERICAN RECREATION COALITION (ARC) — is a Washington-based non-profit organization formed in 1979. Since its inception, ARC has sought to catalyze public/private partnerships to enhance and protect outdoor recreational opportunities and the resources upon which such experiences are based. ARC conducts research on a regular basis, organizes and conducts national conferences and meetings and disseminates information through a variety of newsletters, columns and other media regarding recreational needs and initiatives. ARC also monitors legislative and regulatory proposals that influence recreation and works with government agencies and the U.S. Congress to study public policy issues that will shape future recreational opportunities.
For more than 20 years, ARC has sponsored monthly Recreation Exchange luncheons to stimulate dialogue between the recreation community and national policymakers who play a key role in shaping recreation’s future. ARC also holds quarterly policy forums designed for open discussion and creative new initiatives on public policies influencing outdoor recreation in America. Forums have examined the lessons learned on recreation fees on public lands, recreation and health opportunities in the outdoors, volunteerism on public lands and much more.
American Society for Training and Development - ASTD
ASTD (American Society for Training & Development) is the world’s largest association dedicated to workplace learning and performance professionals. ASTD’s members come from more than 100 countries and connect locally in 134 U.S. chapters, 26 Global Networks, and 12 Global Partners. Members work in thousands of organizations of all sizes, in government, as independent consultants, and suppliers.
ASTD started in 1943. In recent years, ASTD has widened the profession’s focus to link learning and performance to individual and organizational results, and is a sought-after voice on critical public policy issues.
Association of Independent Camps - AIC
The Association of Independent Camps serves success oriented camp professionals who together identify emergent issues and develop programs, services, and products to enhance camp business operations. More specifically we are a member-driven kindred group of the ACA that is dedicated to people who own, direct, or work at independent camps, either for-profit or not-for-profit. Because of our similarity, we are able to assist each other and facilitate dialogue pertaining to the opportunities and challenges of operating an independent camp.
Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education - AORE
The Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) is an organization developed by and for outdoor recreation and education professionals and students. Founded at the International Conference on Outdoor Recreation in 1993, AORE is a grass roots organization dedicated to advancing the field of outdoor recreation and education.
AORE is the only organization dedicated to serving the needs of recreation and education professionals in non-profit settings. Through AORE members have a mechanism to interact with and affect decisions made by public land managers and the human powered outdoor recreation industry.
AORE is committed to promoting ecologically sound stewardship of the natural environment and serves as a collective voice for its members regarding topics of regional and national concern.
Climbing Wall Association - CWA
The Climbing Wall Association, Inc. (CWA) is a 501(c)(06), non-profit, trade association incorporated in May of 2003. The CWA is the only trade association addressing the needs and interests of the climbing wall industry and climbing wall operators. The mission of the Climbing Wall Association is to support the development of the climbing wall industry, to promote the sport of climbing, and to advocate for the interests of our members.
Outdoor Industry Association - OIA
Founded in 1989, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is the premier trade association for companies in the active outdoor recreation business. OIA provides trade services for over 4000 manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, sales representatives and retailers in the outdoor industry. Outdoor Industry Association seeks to ensure a healthy and diverse specialty retail and supply chain based on quality, innovation and service. To this end, OIA works diligently to raise the standards of the industry; increase participation in outdoor recreation to strengthen business markets; provide support services to improve member profitability; represent member interests in the legislative/regulatory process; promote professional training and education; support innovation; and offer cost-saving member benefits.
Wilderness Education Association - WEA
The Wilderness Education Association is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to educate the general public and outdoor leaders in the appropriate use of wildlands and protected areas by developing and implementing educational curricula, programs and by forming strategic alliances with federal land management agencies, conservation groups and all organizations that benefit from wildlands and feel that the existence of wildlands is important to the quality of life.
